The ResMed AirFit P10 Nasal Pillow Mask seals with two soft pillows that rest at the entrance of your nostrils, on a frame little more than silicone and fabric. Unlike a mask that covers your nose, nothing rests on the bridge, so your eyeline stays clear.

The QuickFit headgear pulls on over your head in one piece, then splits into two bands behind your head. There are no clips to fasten, and one of the two bands tightens so you can take up slack as the elastic relaxes over time.

Why pillows seal differently

A nasal pillow enters the nostril rather than covering the nose. The seal forms against the inside of the nostril rim, a small area under fairly even contact, instead of across the varied terrain of a nose and two cheeks.

That is why a mask which leaks around a nasal cushion sometimes seals cleanly on pillows. It is also why a blocked nose is a poor night for them, since there is no pocket of space above the seal to fall back on.

The two walls, and what each one does

Each pillow is molded with two walls. The outer one is thin and gives against your skin, and the inner one is thicker so the pillow keeps its cone shape when your therapy pressure climbs.

A single wall has to do both jobs at once. Soft enough to be comfortable tends to collapse under pressure, and firm enough to hold its shape tends to press. Splitting the work across two layers avoids the compromise.

How the venting keeps the noise down

Most masks release exhaled air through a ring of open holes, which produces a directed jet and the hiss that travels with it. This one vents through woven mesh, spreading the same volume of air across a far wider area.

Slower air is quieter air. ResMed measures the result at 21.4 dBA, low enough that someone sleeping beside you is unlikely to pick the mask out from the rest of the room.

Choosing between the three sizes

Pillow size follows the width of your nostril openings, and not the size of your nose or your build. The three in this pack carry a color ring at the base: clear for Small, gray for Medium and blue for Large.

Start with the one that sits inside the nostril without stretching it and without working loose when you turn your head. If you land between two, try the smaller first, because a pillow that is too wide splays the nostril and works against its own seal.
