ResMed AirFit N30 Nasal Mask

The ResMed AirFit N30 is a nasal cradle CPAP mask whose cushion rests under the base of your nose rather than over it. Unlike nasal pillows that seal inside the nostrils, or nasal masks that cross the nasal bridge, the N30 touches neither of them.

The mask is only three parts: a frame, adjustable headgear, and a cushion. There is very little of it on your face and nothing crossing your line of sight, so it stays out of the way as you fall asleep or get up in the night.

What a nasal cradle seal means for contact

The cushion curves under the base of the nose. It does not insert into the nostrils, does not rest on the nasal bridge, and does not contact the cheeks or the sides of the nose. The seal forms by pressing upward against the soft tissue at the underside of the septum and the base of the nostrils. No part of the mask enters the nasal cavity.

Patients who find full nasal masks like the N20 claustrophobic, or who develop pressure sores on the bony ridge of the nose, are the primary candidates for this contact geometry.

Why tightening the straps makes a leak worse

The two walls of the cushion do different jobs. The outer curved wall handles positioning: it cradles under and around the nose and absorbs movement. The inner membrane does the sealing, and it needs room to inflate.

Pulling the headgear tighter compresses the outer wall against your face and leaves the membrane less space to work, so over-tightening a cradle cushion usually makes a leak worse rather than better. Reseat the cushion under your nose first and let therapy pressure do the rest.

The flex tube and hose movement

The short flexible tube is built into the frame rather than being a separate component. It connects the mask to the standard CPAP hose and absorbs a degree of movement without transmitting hose tension directly to the cushion seal.

That matters more here than on a full face mask. The sealing surface is small and held by air pressure rather than by clamping force, so there is less for a tug on the hose to grip against.

Reordering, compatibility, and cleaning

The colored ring on each cushion tells you which size you are holding: red for Small, blue for Medium, purple for Small Wide. Check the ring before reordering rather than going by the box.

The AirFit N30 is compatible with the AirMini travel CPAP. Replacement cushions are recommended every one to three months, and cushions should be cleaned daily with headgear weekly.
