Fisher & Paykel Brevida Nasal Pillow Mask

The Fisher and Paykel Brevida seals with an AirPillow, a hollow silicone cup your machine inflates around the entrance of your nostrils rather than up into them. The headgear does not have to be pulled tight to hold it. Air pressure does that instead.

The seal is made in two sizes rather than four, because an inflating cup covers a wider range than a fixed cushion can. VisiBlue marks show every point where parts join, and the headgear clips glow in the dark once the lights are out.

What an inflating seal changes

A conventional cushion is a fixed shape held against the face by tension in the straps. Getting it right means finding the one tension that stops a leak without marking the skin, and most people overshoot because tightening works immediately while the cost shows up hours later.

An AirPillow moves the sealing force off the straps and onto the therapy air itself. The cup swells as pressure climbs, which means the seal is at its firmest exactly when the machine is working hardest, and slack at the moments it does not need to be.

Why the range has two seals

A fixed cushion has to match the nostril closely, so manufacturers cut four or five of them and the patient picks one. An expanding cup does not need that resolution, since it fills whatever space it finds within a band of sizes.

That is why Fisher and Paykel offer Extra Small/Small and Medium/Large rather than a longer list. Fewer options means a lower chance of ordering the wrong one, at the cost of less precision for anyone sitting at the far end of either band.

Where the exhaled air goes

Every mask has to release the carbon dioxide you breathe out, and the simplest way is a hole. A hole with pressure behind it makes a jet, and a jet is both audible and directional, which is what a bed partner notices.

The Brevida vents through a diffuser instead. Spreading the same volume over a much larger area drops the speed of the air, and speed is what carries both the noise and the draft across the bed.

Fitting it in the dark

Most mask design assumes a lit room and a patient who is awake. The reality is a seal that has crept sideways at three in the morning and a person who does not want to wake anyone by turning on a light.

Two details answer that. The clips carry a phosphorescent compound so they stay visible after dark, and the blue VisiBlue markings show which part meets which, so orientation does not depend on being able to read a label.
