If your mask holds its seal when you first fall asleep but leaks by the time you wake up, the most common cause is not headgear tension — it is what happens to your cushion seal when you change position during the night. When you shift from your back to your side, the angle between your mask frame and your nasal bridge changes. Most CPAP cushions seal through compression: a silicone flange held against the face by headgear strap tension. That kind of seal resists angular change rather than following it, which means it either breaks, or you have to wear the headgear tight enough to force the mask back into position — tight enough to leave marks. The Eson 2 is built around a different approach to that specific problem.

HOW THE ROLLFIT SEAL FOLLOWS MOVEMENT INSTEAD OF RESISTING IT

The RollFit Seal is a silicone nasal cushion whose base has a curved, convex geometry. Rather than a flat flange that compresses straight down and holds position through headgear tension alone, the curved base can rotate slightly around the nasal bridge contact point — pivoting forward and backward in response to the angular change that happens when you shift positions. The seal stays in surface contact through the movement because it rolls with it rather than against it. There is a second reinforcing mechanism at work: as therapy pressure rises inside the cushion, it pushes the silicone outward against the face, which helps seat the seal without requiring the headgear to be pulled tighter. The version of the RollFit Seal used in the Eson 2 is softer, lighter, and more compact than the one in the original Eson, with added structural support across the full therapy pressure range of 4–30 cmH₂O.

WHY TIGHTENING THE HEADGEAR IS USUALLY THE WRONG RESPONSE TO LEAKING

When a mask starts leaking during the night, tightening the headgear feels like the logical fix — and it sometimes works, temporarily, by forcing a compression seal back into position. The problem is that it treats the symptom rather than the cause. If the cushion is leaking because positional movement is breaking the seal, tighter headgear does not change that geometry — it just means the seal has to fail against more resistance, which produces more facial pressure in the process. If the cushion is leaking because the silicone has degraded, tighter headgear compensates for a worn part that should be replaced. The RollFit Seal's rolling geometry reduces the amount of headgear tension required to maintain contact through movement, which means patients using this mask often find they can run the headgear looser than they were accustomed to with previous masks.

HOW THE ERGOFIT HEADGEAR IS PUT ON AND TAKEN OFF

The ErgoFit headgear offers two methods of use. In the standard method, the headgear is unclipped and reattached each night and adjusted as needed. In the StretchFit method, the headgear is adjusted once to the correct tension and then simply stretched on and off over the head like a hat — without unclipping or readjusting. Once the right tension is calibrated, the StretchFit approach preserves it automatically. There is no nightly readjustment, and the seal conditions that produced a good result on the first use are reproduced each subsequent night without the patient touching a strap.

ABOUT FISHER & PAYKEL

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare is a New Zealand medical device manufacturer whose respiratory equipment is used in hospital intensive care and high-dependency settings worldwide. Their home CPAP products apply engineering developed for clinical use, where seal reliability and patient movement are engineering problems that cannot be solved by telling patients to stay still.

SIZING AND WHAT'S IN THE BOX

The Eson 2 uses a universal frame with three cushion sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. Fisher & Paykel provides a sizing guide. A FitPack containing all three cushion sizes is available separately for patients who want to trial sizes before committing to a replacement. Each Eson 2 includes the nasal mask with RollFit Seal cushion in your selected size, ErgoFit headgear, Easy Frame, a washable diffuser, and a user guide. Replacement cushions are recommended every one to three months; headgear and frame every six months. The Eson 2 is compatible with the AirMini with the appropriate adapter.
