Medistrom Pilot Flex CPAP Battery

The Medistrom Pilot Flex is a 98 Wh lithium battery in a machined aluminum case, built to run a CPAP machine directly rather than through an inverter. It fills two jobs: the backup that sits behind your bed all year, and the only power source on a trip.

It runs both 12 volt and 24 volt machines and works out which it is looking at on its own. Medistrom's list covers the ResMed AirMini, the AirSense 10 and 11, both DreamStations, the Luna G3 and five more.

The Pilot Flex is ideal for patients who lose power often enough to worry about it, who camp or fly with their machine, or who want therapy to carry on without anyone getting up. It suits a nightstand as easily as a carry-on.

Note: Only the ResMed AirMini cables are in the box. Every other machine needs its own Medistrom cable kit, sold separately and not stocked here, so check which one your model takes before you order.

The two ways to wire it

For travel, one cable does everything. The L shaped end with the yellow tip goes into the DC Out port on the battery and the other end into your machine, and the battery senses the connection and starts supplying power on its own.

For backup, you add one more step. The battery stays wired to the machine the same way, and then your machine's own power lead plugs into the battery's Charge Port instead of the wall, using the short adapter where the plug does not match. The battery now sits in the middle, charged from mains and ready to hand over.

Reading the lights and the button

Four green lights across the top edge show what is left, one light per quarter. They blink while charging and hold steady once that quarter is full. The multi function button beside them wakes the battery and shows the level whenever you want it.

A separate small light marks whether the output is currently 12 or 24 volts. There is nothing to set: the figure it shows is what it worked out from the machine you plugged in.

Filling it back up

From empty it takes two to three hours through its own charge port. A 45 watt USB-C charger does the same job in four to six hours, and going through a ResMed AirMini power supply takes seven to nine, because that adapter delivers less.

Medistrom also sells a folding solar panel and a car charger for it. The solar panel needs clear sun and about seven to nine hours, and Medistrom is specific that the battery itself should sit in the shade of the panel while it works, not out in the light.
