Overview
The ResMed AirFit F40 is a compact full face mask with a padded frame that stays low on your face, below your eyes. The frame is wrapped in soft fabric where it touches your skin, and the cushion seals over your nose and mouth.
Its headgear adjusts at just four points, two straps above and two below, which ResMed chose over five to make the mask simpler to put on. With fewer straps to set, an even, comfortable fit usually takes less trial and error at first.
Key Features:
- Seal that adapts: The AdaptiSeal cushion is made of soft silicone that shapes itself to your face, helping it hold a seal through the night.
- Clips that find the frame: Magnets pull the lower strap clips onto the frame, so you can reconnect them in the dark without looking.
- Less pull on the mask: ResMed fitted a short tube to the quick-release elbow to reduce drag, so the mask moves with you when you turn.
- Wide fit range: ResMed estimates its three cushion and three headgear sizes fit about 98 percent of people, based on two clinical studies.
- No natural latex: ResMed's user guide marks the AirFit F40 as made without natural rubber latex, worth checking if latex irritates your skin.
The AirFit F40 is ideal for patients who breathe through their mouth, want a smaller full face mask, or would rather keep the frame below their eyes. It is especially helpful if headgear with many straps has felt fiddly to adjust each night.
How It Works
Parts you can replace one at a time
ResMed builds the F40 as a modular system. The cushion, the headgear and the frame system, which is the frame with a cushion fitted, are each sold as their own part.
That means a worn cushion or a stretched strap can be changed without buying the complete mask again, as long as you match the size you already use.
Safety valve and pressure range
The mask includes an anti-asphyxia valve. If the airflow from your machine stops, the valve opens so you can draw in room air, at pressures below 4 cmH2O.
ResMed's user guide gives a therapy pressure range of 4 to 30 cmH2O for the AirFit F40.
Where the fit range figure comes from
ResMed ran two external studies in 2023. One compared the F40 with the AirFit F20 in Australia, and the other compared it with another brand's full face mask in the US.
The 98 percent figure is ResMed's estimate from facial measurements across those groups, not a promise for any one face. The fitting template is still the best way to check your own size.

Everything you need to know about the ResMed AirFit F40 Full Face Mask
Compact padded frame
The frame sits below your eyes and is covered in soft nylon fabric where it rests on your face. ResMed designed that padding for comfort and to help reduce facial marks, and keeping the frame low leaves your view above it open.
QuietAir vent ring
Your exhaled air leaves through a vent ring built into the cushion rather than a single opening. ResMed rates the mask's sound power at 20 dBA with this vent, so it is designed to stay quiet for you and anyone nearby.
Sizing with the template
Cushion size is chosen with ResMed's printable fitting template, which you hold up to your face to find your size. Print it at actual size with no scaling, because a shrunken or enlarged template points you to the wrong cushion.

AdaptiSeal cushion
The soft silicone cushion adapts to the shape of your face, so it is designed to keep its seal as you move.
Magnetic headgear clips
Clips on the lower straps snap onto magnets in the frame, so taking the mask off never means undoing your strap settings.
Short tube
A short tube with a quick-release elbow moves along with you, so less drag tugs at the mask when you shift.
Four adjustment points
Two upper and two lower straps set the fit, so there are fewer adjustments to balance when you first put it on.
Frequently Asked Questions
What sizes does the AirFit F40 come in?
The cushion is offered in Small Wide, Medium and Large, and the headgear in Small, Standard and Large. ResMed builds five kits, so you choose a cushion and a headgear size together in the selector above.
Why do some headgear sizes need Medium?
Because those are the kits ResMed makes. Small and Large headgear ship only with the Medium cushion, while the Small Wide and Large cushions come with Standard headgear.
How do I clean the AirFit F40?
ResMed advises washing the cushion, elbow, short tube and vent ring daily, and the frame and headgear weekly, in warm soapy water made with a mild liquid detergent. Use a soft brush on the vent ring holes, rinse well and let the parts dry away from sunlight.
Will it work with my machine?
Yes. The AirFit F40 uses a standard CPAP hose connection and works with most CPAP and BiPAP machines. It will not connect to an AirMini, and on a ResMed machine you choose Pillows in the mask setting menu.
Do I need a prescription?
Yes, CPAP masks are prescription devices. You can still complete checkout without one: we hold the order rather than cancel it, and ship as soon as we can verify your prescription.
