ResMed AirTouch N30i Nasal Mask

The ResMed AirTouch N30i is a nasal cradle mask built around the ComfiSoft fabric cushion, which sits under your nose rather than over it. Unlike a silicone cushion, fabric stays warm and dry against the skin and does not turn slick as facial oil builds through the night.

The frame carries air to the cushion through hollow arms at your cheeks and connects at the crown of your head. Every part of it is wrapped in the same soft fabric, so no rigid plastic edge rests against your face or catches in your hair.

Why a fabric cushion behaves differently

Silicone seals by pressing back against skin, and the usual answer to a leak is another turn on the straps. That is where pressure marks start.

Woven fabric over foam compresses instead of pushing back, spreading load across a wider patch of skin. It also breathes, so the ring of trapped moisture that forms under a silicone seal does not build up in the same way.

The cost of a fabric seal

Fabric is porous, which is the reason it feels better and also the reason it wears faster. Skin oil soaks into the weave rather than wiping off it, and once the surface nap flattens the cushion stops sealing as cleanly.

ResMed puts the service life at around two weeks, against a month or more for silicone. Plan for that before committing to this cushion type, because it is the single biggest practical difference across the N30i range.

Frame sizing against cushion sizing

These are two independent measurements, and assuming one follows the other is the most common ordering mistake. Frame size follows head circumference and where the headgear crosses your skull, and two are made.

Cushion size follows the width and depth of your nose just above the lip, and three are made. Small Wide is not a step between Small and Medium: it is Small height on a broader base, for a nose that is wide and shallow.

Washing without ruining the nap

Warm water, mild soap, and your fingers only. A bristle brush breaks the surface of the weave, and once that happens the cushion pills and the seal goes patchy no matter how carefully you wash it afterwards.

Squeeze the water out rather than wringing, and dry it flat and out of the sun. The headgear and frame tolerate the same routine, though they last far longer and are replaced on a much slower cycle.
